Despite its seemingly remote location, northern Maine is readily accessible by two major highways (U.S. Interstate 95 from the South and the Trans Canada from the North), regular air service to the Northern Maine Regional Airport, and rail. Major deep water seaports are close by in coastal Maine and New Brunswick, and Presque Isle now offers an intermodal rail facility making transport of goods to and from the region available by almost any means.
The International Connection
Aroostook County has long enjoyed the benefits of international trade with Canada. With longstanding economic and cultural ties with the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick, cross border partnerships and business relationships are a major factor for many businesses.
Canadian Customs
Along the Canadian border, Aroostook shares three customs stations maintained by the U.S. Customs Service. Fort Fairfield and Limestone are open 24 hours a day. The station at Easton has varying operating hours, depending on demand. Commercial ports of entry are available at Houlton and Van Buren.
