How To Recycle With NKV

As trash is generated in your home or office, separate the following recyclable items from general refuse: 1) recyclables, 2) yard wastes, 3) inert wastes.

Recyclables & Recycling Guidelines

Remember to:

  • Keep all recycling, clean and dry.
  • Rinse out cans, jars, milk jugs

Separate your recyclables into the following categories:

  1. Newspaper, Magazines, Advertisements & Inserts
  2. Corrugated Cardboard
Flatten - don't use boxes for trash containers
  3. Office Paper
    No carbon, NCR paper
  4. Tin Cans
Just rinse clean, the labels can stay.
  5. Plastic #2 HDPE
Milk jugs, liquid laundry product containers
    Discard all caps.
  6. Glass Jars and Bottles
    Lables OK
No drinking glasses, light bulbs or ceramics.
  7. Textiles (old clothing)
Should be clean and put in plastic trash bags.
Good reusable items can be placed in NKV's "Take It or Leave it Shop".
  8. Used Motor Oil (Hydraulic & Diesel too)
Bring it to the Recycling Center. We use it to heat the building.

Yard Wastes
Leaves, Grass Clippings, and Brush

Try backyard composting, it is a great way to recycle yard waste and kitchen food wastes. Household waste can be reduced by up to 25% by composting. NKV has a ban prohibiting the disposal of yardwaste with household waste. NKV has backyard composting units for sale at the recycling center. Composting information is also available at the recycling center.

Project Compost:

NKV's master composter holds informational workshops throughout the region on how to get started in backyard composting. Inquire at the recycling center about any upcoming workshops scheduled.

If you don't have a commercial hauler picking up your trash don't bag yard waste items. If you don't compost at home, NKV has a compost site at the recycling center. If you can not bring the yard waste to the transfer station yourself, inquire about a separate pick-up.

Click here for more information on composting.

Inert Wastes
Bricks, Concrete, Gravel, Sand and Wood Ashes

Inert wastes are exempt from solid waste disposal regulations and can be used anywhere that clean fill is allowed to be placed. Do not place the inert wastes with regular garbage.

Wood ashes make great soil conditioners for home vegetables and flower gardens. Ashes can also be added to backyard compost piles. Due to the extreme fire hazard wood ashes should never be combined with household garbage.

Helpful Hints
1. To reduce the weight (you're paying $0.05 per pound) of your waste headed for disposal, keep your household trash undercover and dry. Wet soggy garbage weighs a lot more than dry does. It will also be easier to drag those bags to the curb or car.
2. Try to reuse things that normally would be thrown away. Visit our "Take It or Leave it Shop" a place to leave reusable items for something else to take home.
3. Buy Smart. Try to use products packaged with less. Buy products made from recycled materials, it helps save energy and natural resources and also helps create demand for the materials that you're recycling.

Bulky Waste Management at NKV

The majority of this districts waste is converted to electricity at the P.E.R.C. incincerator in Orrington, Maine. Because of the physical characteristics of certain wastes, they cannot be handled by P.E.R.C.. We call these "Bulky Waste" and they include the following items.

Metal:
Separate as much metal as possible. There is a metal pile at the transfer station.

Wood & Brush:
Separate clean wood from painted wood and plywood.

Mattresses, Large Furniture, Sheetrock, Plaster Roof Shingles:
These items are stockpiled and transferred to a demolition landfill.

Truck and Farm Tires:
Tires larger than 16" are not accepted at this facility. Contact the NKV Transfer Station for advice on disposal of these tires.

Bulky Waste Fee:
Due to the high costs associated with disposing of bulky wastes NKV charges a fee of $16.00 per cubic yard for wood, brush, construction and demolition debris (roofing, siding, etc.) This fee is subject to change.

If you're demolishing a house or building, contact the NKV transfer station manager or the regional DEP office for possible on-site disposal options that may save you and the district dollars.

Recycling is saving your tax dollars. The more recyclables that everyone removes from their trash the more you save.

Recycling also conserves precious natural resources (such as fossil fuels, trees, and minerals) that go into the making of the products we purchase.

If you would like to recycle at curbside, call your local refuse hauler or the NKV Transfer Station/Recycling Center at (207) 757-8700.

We'll be happy to help you with your recycling efforts.
